Verdict: False

This claim is inaccurate. The flyer predates the current protests at Columbia University.

Fact Check:

Columbia University President Minouche Shafik asked campus protesters to voluntarily disperse, NBC News reported. She said the protests made Jewish students and faculty feel uncomfortable and also wishes to give students a proper graduation ceremony.

A post shared on Instagram alleges that pro-Palestine protesters handed out flyers defending Hamas’s sexual assault against the Israelis. The alleged flyer shows a vertical Palestinian flag with text printed on it.

The text reads, “Rape Is Resistance.”

The caption reads, “Really, @columbia, this is considered freedom of speech? So…the next time someone is r*ped, it’s fine as long as the perpetrator claims resistance?!”

The claim is inaccurate. The photo of this flyer predates the recent protests at Columbia University. This image has been shared on social media since early March.

Students set up a protest on April 17 to protest on behalf of Palestine, according to Fox 5 New York. Columbia University President Shafik appeared before Congress and denounced antisemitism on her campus.

The flyer is a reference to the sexual assaults that Hamas perpetrated against Israelis on Oct 7. A new documentary will detail the attack that left 1,200 dead in Israel and feature first-hand accounts, according to Fox. (RELATED: Does Video Show Explosion At Francis Scott Key Bridge?)
